# What is the role of IMO?

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a London based United Nations agency that sets global standards for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping. Its main role is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry.The IMO defines the international shipping policy and plays a key role in achieving the objectives set out in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
